Chess · Stage 5: Middlegame
What the middlegame is about
The opening gets your pieces out. The middlegame asks what they are for.
You were part-way through this lesson, at step 1 of 4.
Already know this? Take the check: just the questions, no reading. Get them all right first time and the lesson counts as done.
In the middlegame the pieces are out and the kings are tucked away. The question changes from how to develop to what to aim for. Plans come from the pawns, which decide which squares are strong, which files can open and where to attack.
